Our Backgrounds
Rebecca D. Breeding
In college Rebecca majored in mathematics with a minor in physics. She graduated with a B.S. from the University of Richmond in Virginia. For most of her career Rebecca has worked in the field of data processing in both technical and managerial positions. She is retired from the International Business Machines, Inc. (IBM).

Simpson College, Indianola, IA (1956 - 1959), physics; Drake University, Des Moines, IA (1959 - 1960) physics, B.A.; University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN (1960 - 1961), graduate physics; and Columbia University, New York City, NY (1965 - 1972 (jointly with NCSC below)) Ph.D., geophysics/physical oceanography.

Professional Experience - Science
Research. Have conducted research at the Naval Coastal Systems Center (NCSC), Panama City, FL (1962 - 1978); Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, Palisades, NY (1965 - 1970 (jointly with NCSC)); Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL (1977 - 1979); Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech), Melbourne, FL (1979 - 1987); Naval Oceanographic Office, Stennis Space Center, MS (1988); and Naval Research Laboratory, Stennis Space Center, MS (1988 - March 31, 1998).

Teaching Experience - Science
Have taught at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, Graduate Teaching Assistantship (1960 - 1961); Florida state University, Tallahassee, FL, Visiting Associate Professor of Oceanography (1977 - 1979); and Florida Institute of Technology (FIT), Melbourne, FL, Associate Professor of Oceanography and Ocean Engineering (1979 - 1987). Courses taught include graduate and undergraduate courses on subjects in physics, geophysics, physical oceanography, ocean engineering, and mathematical methods of physics. Headed the Physical Oceanography program and supervised graduate students.

Published papers. Have prepared technical laboratory reports and published papers in society proceedings and refereed journals. Have presented papers at numerous International conferences.
Professional societies. Have membership in the following societies: American Geophysical Union, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, American Meteorological Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi (honorary), and Sigma Pi Sigma (honorary).
