Tour Beijing to Shanghai with Yangtze River Cruise

We were on a Wendy Wu escorted tour of China which is reviewed in the China Intro Page. The tour started in Beijing, where there were three nights on the tour including the Great Wall. From Beijing we flew to Xian where we stayed for two nights and saw the Terracotta Warriors. From Xian we flew to Wuhan where we were taken by motor coach to the Yangtze River at Yichang. There we boarded the Victoria Katarina river cruise ship and stayed for four nights. Both the ship and amazing crew shows are reviewed. For a description of the daily shore excursions see the Yangtze River Excursions. We left the cruise ship in Chongqing. From there we flew to Guilin where we spent one night. From Guilin we took a river cruise boat on the Li River to Yangshuo where we stayed two nights in the presence of gorgeous scenery. Guilin, the Li River, and Yangshuo are described here. The tour ended with two nights in Shanghai. Contact Us for more information.

After visiting the Pandas we were taken to the Chongqing airport where we had a wonderful lunch of noodles, a speciality in the area. We then flew to Guilin; the flight took about an hour an twenty minutes. Upon arrival in Guilin we toured the Reed Flute Caves. The caves are named after reeds once found at the cave entrance that were used to make flutes. The caves had numerous stalactites and stalagmites that were beautifully lit with colorful lighting. See the picture at the top of this page and the one above. From the caves we went to see the South China Pearl Museum and learned about pearls. Dinner was at a high quality restaurant and the night was spent at a hotel in Guilin.

After breakfast at the hotel we boarded a boat with about 100 passengers for a cruise on the Li River. Along the way we saw spectacular scenery, especially of many karst limestone mountains with sharp triangular shaped peaks, as seen in the picture above. There were many boats in the river.

From time to time we spotted animals on the riverbanks. A goat is seen above and a grazing water buffalo is pictured below. Lunch was on the boat.

Once we reached Yangshuo we walked through a market, shown above, to our hotel where we spent two nights. The afternoon was at our leisure.

Dinner was at our hotel, which was served on a very large round table big enough to seat all of us on the tour. That evening we saw the spectacular Impression Liu Sanjie Light Show in what is said to be the largest natural theater in the world. This was an optional excursion, and it was directed by Zhang Yimou the creator of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. The performers were dressed in beautiful costumes as seen in the picture above.

The show takes place in the Li River and on its riverbanks in Yangshuo. It has an enormous cast of six hundred local performers. The show is a love story about a woman named Liu Sanjie that has a beautiful voice and is in love with a local farmer boy. A warlord wants Liu Sanjie for himself and he kidnaps her. Her lover and the village people rescue Liu and the couple live happily ever after. The different routines presented included music and special lighting with torches carried by the actors and beautiful colored spot lights on the performers. In addition, twelve of the gorgeous karst mountains are lit the background. The show was very well done and is not to be missed. Note the scenes shown above and below.

A Walk through the Yangshuo Countryside

A beautiful and fascinating walk in the countryside near Yangshuo.

A beautiful and fascinating walk in the countryside near Yangshuo.

After breakfast we spent the morning on a long and peaceful walk through the Yangshuo countryside with our local guide Ping (Effie). The beauty of this part of China is stunning, and must be one of the most beautiful places on our planet. Whether it be the jagged peaks of the karst mountains, the greenery of the surrounding landscape, or the river with fascinating boats the view is magnificent. Above our tour group is starting out on the walk.

It was interesting to see the young boys pictured above playing basketball. Below a family was coming toward me in their motorized vehicle. I quickly snapped their picture. Note the smiles on their faces. The Chinese people are very friendly and enjoy seeing visitors from the western world.

Fishing Demonstration with Cormorants

Cormorants (birds) trained to dive for fish and bring back to the fisherman.

The afternoon was free time to relax. Lunch was at a restaurant and dinner again at the hotel and the large round table. In the evening we walked to the Li River where we saw a fishing demonstration. The fisherman used cormorants (birds) trained to dive into the water and catch fish in their mouths without eating them, and instead present the fish to the fisherman. After catching a number of fish the cormorants are rewarded with a fish to eat. Following the fishing demonstration we walked back to the hotel. As is common in all of the cities we saw many people on the sidewalks and walking in streets.
